Church of San Bartolomé
Church of San Bartolomé, Gothic Catholic church in Logroño, Spain.
The Church of San Bartolomé is a Gothic house of prayer in Logroño with three naves supported by polygonal pillars and a large transept. The interior features cross vaults throughout, and the apse retains Romanesque elements, while the tower was rebuilt with Mudejar details after suffering damage centuries ago.
Construction began in the 12th century, establishing the church as a Gothic structure of its era. The building suffered damage during military conflict in the 16th century, prompting repairs that introduced new architectural styles to its tower.
The Gothic entrance portal displays scenes from the life of Saint Bartholomew carved in stone, which visitors encounter when arriving at the church. These reliefs reflect the religious beliefs and artistic values that shaped Logroño's community during the medieval period.
The church sits at Plaza de San Bartolomé in the city center and is easily reached on foot. Visitors should note that it remains an active place of worship, so respectful behavior and appropriate dress are expected when entering.
The interior maintains Romanesque crossing and apse structures that have endured through centuries of changes. Few visitors notice that the choir area now appears spare, a result of the removal of an elaborate 18th-century altarpiece decades ago.

Logroño is a city where wine and history come together naturally. The old town features narrow streets with arcades, lined with restaurants and bars where visitors can taste local food and watch daily life unfold. Gothic churches mark the skyline and speak to the city's past, while historical palaces stand along the streets. Museums here show art and the region's heritage. Wineries are central to the experience. Places like Marques de Murrieta, Bodegas Franco Españolas, and Bodegas Campo Viejo offer tours and tastings. Visitors can learn how Rioja wines are made and sample different varieties. The cellars often sit in old buildings and reveal the traditions that have shaped the region for centuries. The surrounding area invites walking and exploration. The Ebro River and parks nearby offer quiet paths for wandering and resting. The bridge across the river connects different parts of the city and gives views of the landscape. Whether you wander the old town streets, visit a winery, or take a peaceful walk, Logroño offers something for different interests and moods.
