Castle of Arenas de San Pedro

The Castle of Arenas de San Pedro is a medieval fortress with stone towers, robust walls, and defensive structures positioned in the lower section of town. The complex displays Gothic architectural features and includes various fortified spaces that reflect the lives of its inhabitants.

Construction began in 1400 under Constable Ruy López Dávalos, who received authorization from King Henry III to demonstrate control over granted territories. The project marked an important moment in consolidating noble power in this region.

The fortress has been recognized as a cultural property since 1931 and appears on the town's coat of arms. It represents the local identity and reminds visitors of the medieval rule that shaped the region.

The site is open for cultural events, outdoor performances, exhibitions, and educational tours highlighting medieval architecture. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and wear comfortable shoes, as the structure features typical medieval conditions.

Contrary to typical medieval practices of building castles on elevated positions, this fortress was constructed in one of the town's lowest areas. The unusual location resulted from construction disputes and delays during the building process.
