Church of Saint Mary, Arenys

The Church of Saint Mary in Arenys de Mar is a Renaissance building with a Baroque facade that displays smooth columns and a curved crown above the entrance. The interior features Gothic ribbed vaults supported by Doric Renaissance capitals, blending different architectural styles throughout the space.

Construction took place between 1583 and 1628 after permission was granted in 1575. Architect Joan de Tours led the project alongside his sons Joan and Dionís.

The main altarpiece, created between 1706 and 1711 by sculptor Pau Costa, stands as one of the largest Baroque altarpieces in Catalonia. This ornate carving continues to dominate the interior and reflects the artistic ambitions of the community during that period.

The building is located at Plaça d'Església and functions as an active parish church within the Archdiocese of Barcelona and the Diocese of Girona. Visitors should wear respectful clothing and check for ongoing religious services, as these may affect access to certain areas.
