Castell de Taradell

Castell de Taradell is a medieval fortress in Catalonia positioned at about 800 meters elevation with surviving sections of perimeter walls and masonry built using opus spicatum technique. The ruins show evidence of different construction periods through their stone patterns and remaining structural elements across the site.

The castle appears in written records starting in 893. A major reconstruction took place in the 14th century, and by the 17th century it had become property of the Viscount of Joc.

The Chapel of Santa Creu del Castell has stood here since the 12th century as part of the complex. It shows that this place served both as a stronghold and as a place of worship for the people living nearby.

Access is from a walking path that starts in the village of Taradell, and sturdy footwear is needed because the terrain is uneven. Visit during cooler months when conditions are most comfortable for exploring the site on foot.

A circular tower on the northern side was built from shaped stones during the 10th or 11th century to guard the main gate. This tower remains one of the most recognizable parts of the site today.
