Roman walls of Barcelona
Roman walls of Barcelona, Roman defensive wall in Gothic Quarter, Spain
The ancient fortification extends for 1.5 kilometers around Barcelona's historic center, featuring 81 rectangular towers rising to 18 meters in height.
The Romans constructed the initial wall in the first century BCE, later reinforcing it with a second barrier in the fourth century following Frank invasions.
The preserved sections demonstrate Roman engineering methods, incorporating opus quadratum stonework with regular blocks and internal concrete filling techniques.
Visitors can examine the wall remains at Plaza Nova, near Barcelona Cathedral, where two original towers frame the ancient Decumanus Maximus entrance.
The medieval Chapel of Saint Agatha stands directly upon the Roman wall segments, creating a combined architectural structure from different periods.
