Pantheon of Illustrious Men, Byzantine Revival mausoleum in Pacifico, Madrid, Spain
The Pantheon of Illustrious Men is a Byzantine Revival mausoleum in the Pacifico neighborhood of Madrid. The square structure includes three arcades with colored glass galleries and two hemispherical domes positioned at opposite corners.
Fernando Arbos y Tremanti designed the building between 1892 and 1899 as a resting place for important politicians of the 19th century. The complex received a replica Statue of Liberty from 1857 in 1912, previously located elsewhere.
The interior displays stone sculptures by Mariano Benlliure and Agustin Querol, honoring key figures from Spanish political life. These monuments form an artistic chronicle of the country's political history during a period of social change.
The mausoleum at Calle Julian Gayarre 3 offers free access and opens regularly throughout the week. The rooms provide enough space to move around and all main areas are reachable at ground level.
A replica Statue of Liberty from 1857 stands within the complex and was brought here in 1912. This statue recalls republican ideals and connects American symbolism with Spanish memorial culture.
