Pantà de Sant Ponç, lake in Solsonès, Spain
The Pantà de Sant Ponç is a large reservoir in the Solsonès region, situated in a valley along the Cardener river. The water is held back by a dam nearly 60 meters high and over 300 meters long, creating a wide basin that covers many hectares.
Construction began in 1949 by the Hydrographic Confederation of the Eastern Pyrenees and reached full completion in 1964, with a temporary opening in 1954. It was the first major dam project in the Llobregat basin, marking an important moment for local infrastructure development.
Parking is available near the dam at the reservoir entrance, and an easy path runs along the water suitable for beginners. A complete loop around the entire lake is possible and takes about 6 hours with breaks; it is recommended to bring water and start early to make the most of your visit.
Where water levels drop during dry years, remnants of an old church that was flooded when the basin filled can become visible. These submerged remains remind visitors of the human history that existed before the reservoir was built and had to make way for the water.
