Santa Maria de Mur

Santa Maria de Mur is a Romanesque monastery situated at high elevation featuring three barrel-vaulted naves supported by stone pillars. The building complex includes defensive walls that transformed it into a fortified religious structure.

The monastery was established in the late 11th century and received ecclesiastical approval shortly after its founding. This early authorization allowed it to develop into an important religious center of the region.

The monastery served as a place where monks practiced their religious life surrounded by decorated walls that expressed their faith. The community left behind visual marks of devotion through paintings and architectural choices.

The site is located in a remote area that requires preparation before visiting. Access can be challenging depending on season and weather, so checking conditions beforehand is advisable.

The valuable apse murals were moved to North America in the early 20th century, separating the artworks from their original setting. Though the paintings now reside far away, traces of their presence remain visible on the walls they once decorated.
