Serantesko gotorlekuak

Serantesko gotorlekuak is a fortified complex on Mount Serantes composed of multiple military structures built at different periods and positioned across various elevations. The site includes a watchtower, a pentagonal fort, and a powder magazine that functioned together as a coastal defense system.

The site originated during Felipe V's reign amid the War of Succession when the Spanish military needed coastal defense positions. The main structures visible today were constructed and expanded throughout the 19th century as military strategy and technology evolved.

The fortifications hold meaning for the local community, particularly through seasonal gatherings that connect residents to the place and its surroundings. These occasions show how the site remains woven into everyday life beyond its role as a historical monument.

It is best to visit during dry weather since the terrain can become slippery on hillsides. Wearing sturdy footwear is recommended, and visitors should allow plenty of time to explore the various structures spread across the elevation changes of the site.

A pentagonal structure was erected in the late 1800s at a location called Nine Crosses and housed troops for several decades. The fort sat empty for much of the following century, becoming a quiet reminder of a brief military era.
