Convent de Sant Agustí Vell, Barcelona
Convent de Sant Agustí Vell, Barcelona, Gothic and Baroque monastery in Sant Pere district, Barcelona, Spain
Convent de Sant Agustí Vell is a structure blending Gothic and Baroque styles in the Sant Pere neighborhood. The church interior spans about 58 meters long and reaches 25 meters high, displaying layers of construction from different periods.
The convent was founded in 1349 and suffered severe damage in 1716 during resistance against Philip V. These events forced the Augustinian community to abandon the site and seek refuge elsewhere.
The convent became home to the Tanners Guild in 1401, who chose Saint Augustine as their protector. This bond between the trade and the sacred still shapes how locals view the building today.
The complex now houses the Barcelona Photographic Archive and the Chocolate Museum, offering visitors cultural exhibitions within the historical building. Allow time to explore both collections and experience how modern displays fit within the old walls.
After losing its religious purpose, the structure became home to the Royal Military Academy of Mathematics starting in 1720. This unexpected transformation turned a sacred space into a center for scientific and military training.
