Sisapo

Sisapo is an archaeological site in Ciudad Real containing ruins of public buildings, houses, and multiple structures arranged across the land. The remains reveal how a substantial settlement was constructed in layers over time.

The settlement developed as a Roman outpost and grew into an important center for trade and mining operations. As the Roman period ended, the place gradually fell into decline and was left behind.

Pottery and household objects found here show how local people and Romans lived side by side in the same community. The artifacts reveal how both groups shaped daily life together through shared practices.

The site can be explored on foot with various sections of the ancient structures visible across the grounds. Wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is uneven and shade is limited in many areas.

The site was closely tied to nearby cinnabar mines that supplied mercury, a highly valued material in ancient times. This connection made it a hub for processing and trading this precious resource.
