Telefèric d'Olesa a Esparreguera, Cable car system in Baix Llobregat, Spain
The Telefèric d'Olesa a Esparreguera was an aerial tramway in Baix Llobregat that carried two cabins holding 15 passengers each across approximately 1000 meters between two municipalities. The system had ten intermediate pylons and climbed a vertical distance of about 90 meters during each journey.
This aerial tramway opened on October 14, 2005, connecting two Catalan municipalities for the first time. Operations ended on January 1, 2012, as economic pressures from Spain's financial crisis made it unsustainable to continue.
This cable car linked people from Esparreguera to the train station at Olesa de Montserrat, making it easier for them to reach Barcelona and other destinations. The system represented a modern connection between two communities separated by geography.
The cable car operated only in suitable weather conditions, as strong winds or storms could interrupt service. Today, the structure remains visible in the landscape but is no longer operational, and access to the installation itself may be restricted.
Two tall pylons reaching about 32 meters high near the Llobregat River allowed the cables to cross the water in a single span. The two cabins would pass each other between pylons P4 and P5, creating a notable technical feature of the design.
