La España Industrial, Industrial complex in Sants, Spain.
La España Industrial is a factory complex in Sants that unified specialized departments for complete cotton production under one roof. The facility processed raw fibers, spun them into yarn, wove the fabric, and refined the finished product in a single integrated operation.
The facility was founded in 1847 as a Spanish cotton company and pioneered the joint-stock company model in the nation. It imported machinery from Manchester and used steam power to help make Barcelona Spain's leading textile center.
The complex shows how factory owners took care of their workers through childcare, cafeterias, and recreational areas, shaping life in Barcelona's industrial neighborhoods. This kind of worker support was uncommon for factories of that time and reveals the progressive thinking of its operators.
The site was converted into a public park and sports center in 1985, now combining green spaces with preserved historic buildings. Visitors can walk through original structures and explore modern recreational facilities while seeing remnants of the industrial past.
Workers called the site Vapor Nou to set it apart from a nearby older factory named Vapor Vell. These names both refer to the steam power that drove both factories during the era of industrial expansion.
