The earliest documented reference to this theatrical performance dates back to 1538, when it originated as a civic urban spectacle before moving into religious settings.

Local residents of Olesa de Montserrat voluntarily participate in the production each year, maintaining a tradition passed down through generations of families.

Performances take place during weekends in March and April at the Teatro de la Pasión, located at Anselm Clavé 109 in Olesa de Montserrat.

In 1996, the production set a world record with 729 actors simultaneously performing on stage during a single representation.
