Parc de l'Agulla, stuwmeer in Catalonië, Spanje
Parc de l'Agulla is a water reservoir and park in Manresa built between 1966 and 1974, holding nearly 200,000 cubic meters of water supplied by the medieval Sèquia water channel. The lake is surrounded by parkland with about 688 trees representing around twenty species, featuring walking paths, play areas for children, and a visitor center that explains the history of the ancient irrigation system.
The lake was constructed between 1966 and 1974 as a modern water storage facility to supply Manresa from the medieval Sèquia irrigation channel extending 26 kilometers across the region. This project continued a thousand-year tradition of water management that had shaped agriculture and water supply in the area.
The park serves as a gathering place for Manresa residents, particularly during the Fiesta Mayor when the lakeside becomes the center of celebrations with fireworks reflected on the water. The name l'Agulla reflects the connection to the ancient Sèquia irrigation channel, a medieval water system that shaped the region's agricultural heritage.
The park is easily accessible by car or public transport with clear signage and is designed to welcome all visitors. There is a visitor center providing information, children's play areas, and nearby refreshment options including a small bar and ice cream stand.
Floating artificial islands planted with water vegetation were installed in the lake in 2003 and 2004 to naturally filter the water and prevent excessive algae growth. These islands host adapted plant species that help maintain water quality while being nearly invisible to casual observers passing by.
