Santuario de la Cueva Santa, Sacred grotto in Altura, Spain
The natural cave sanctuary, situated at 811 meters elevation in Sierra Calderona, extends 20 meters deep with a main chamber of 30x23x17 meters.
First mentioned in pastoral records from the 16th century, the cave transformed from a shepherd shelter into a religious sanctuary following reported Marian apparitions.
The sanctuary holds a marble altar featuring sculptures of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, alongside a carved relief depicting the Virgin Mary.
Located 12 kilometers from Altura town center, the sanctuary remains accessible through the CV-245 road connecting Altura with Alcublas.
Speleological studies conducted since 1954 revealed prehistoric cave paintings and engravings within the deeper sections of the natural formation.
