Xalet del Catllaràs, Mountain hut and cultural asset in La Pobla de Lillet, Spain
The Xalet del Catllaràs is a mountain hut at 1,371 meters (4,500 feet) elevation featuring a rectangular design with ground floor, first floor, and attic covered by a catenary vault. The building contains several separate living quarters connected by a central staircase.
The building was constructed between 1901 and 1903 by the Asland Company and initially served as a residence for English engineers managing coal mining operations in the region. This early phase shaped its role as a worker accommodation in the mining industry.
The structure displays Catalan modernism through its mansard windows and sloped visors, reflecting the craftsmanship of its era. Local stone and materials connect the architecture to the surrounding mountain landscape.
The site sits in a mountain area with numerous hiking trails that branch out from the location, offering sustained paths through the Serra del Catllaràs range. Visitors should come prepared for mountain conditions and bring suitable gear along with weather-resistant clothing.
Antoni Gaudí designed this mountain retreat for industrialist Eusebi Güell, with six separate living quarters connected through a central staircase. This arrangement allowed multiple families or guests to occupy independent spaces while remaining linked by the central structure.
