Mercat Central

Mercat Central, Art Nouveau marketplace in Tarragona, Spain

Mercat Central is a market hall in Tarragona with three interior sections divided by wrought iron columns and surrounded by stone walls. Large arched windows along the structure bring natural light into the space where vendors and shoppers gather.

Around 1915, architect Josep Maria Pujol i de Barberà designed the building on a former square to gather scattered vendor locations from across the city into one place. This consolidation made shopping more convenient and organized for residents.

The market serves as a daily meeting place for residents who shop and gather here regularly. Local vendors sell regional produce, fish, and food specialties that reflect how people in the area feed themselves and maintain their traditions.

The market is located near Rambla Nova and is easy to reach on foot. It opens most weekdays and offers fresh produce and local specialties for shopping.

The building's facade features a carillon clock that chimes twice daily and displays six figures dancing to the tune of the local Santa Tecla festival. This detail creates a playful connection between the market and local celebration.
