Albera Natural Site, Protected natural site in Alt Empordà, Spain.
Albera Natural Site is a protected area in the eastern Pyrenees that straddles the border between Catalonia and France. It contains Mediterranean forests, mountain meadows, and diverse habitats divided into two main sectors with marked trails for walking.
Official protection came in 1986 when the area was designated to safeguard the Mediterranean tortoise and distinctive plants. This designation recognized the biological importance of the place for species that were facing threats.
Megalithic structures scattered across the land date back to Neolithic times and remain visible landmarks in the landscape. These ancient monuments show how people shaped this territory thousands of years ago and left their mark on it.
Walking trails are marked throughout the area and visitors can explore both sectors on foot. Expect mountain terrain and bring appropriate gear for hiking in changing weather conditions.
The area shelters the last wild populations of Mediterranean tortoises remaining on the Iberian Peninsula. These reptiles are difficult to spot, making their survival in this location particularly noteworthy.
