Teatre Principal, Art Nouveau theater in Terrassa, Spain.
Teatre Principal is an Art Nouveau theater in Terrassa with a striking central dome decorated in mosaics and polychrome stained glass featuring plant designs on its main front. The main hall seats around 600 people and is complemented by specialized spaces including a Dome Room and a separate Rehearsal Room.
The building was constructed in 1911 by architects Enric Catà and Francesc Guàrdia, replacing an earlier theater that stood from 1866. In 1916, Josep Maria Coll i Bacardí carried out significant modifications that removed much of the original Art Nouveau ornamentation from the exterior.
Two portrait busts honor the artist Joan Prat i Ubach and the composer Emili Daura i Oller, both from Terrassa. These sculptures celebrate local figures who shaped the city's artistic identity.
The theater is easily accessible and operates regularly for performances, so visitors should check the current program before planning a visit. The various rooms allow for both large events and smaller, more intimate performances depending on needs.
The building tells an interesting story of architectural changes, as renovations in the 1910s significantly altered its outward character. This transformation shows how theater buildings adapt over time to changing needs and tastes.
