GR 1, long-distance footpath in Spain
The GR 1 is a continuous footpath spanning around 1600 kilometers from the Catalonian coast near Ampurias westward to the Atlantic Ocean in Galicia. The route crosses Catalonia, Aragon, Navarre, Basque Country and Castile and Leon, marked with red and white blazes on trees and rocks throughout.
The trail was planned in Catalonia during the 1980s and partially follows ancient trade routes and medieval pathways. Many of the villages it passes through were once border settlements between medieval kingdoms.
The trail passes through villages with narrow streets and stone buildings that reflect centuries of settlement patterns. Local traditions like traditional crafts remain visible in some communities along the route.
The trail is well-marked with red and white blazes and divided into sections that allow for short daily walks or completing the entire route over several weeks. Sturdy footwear, plenty of water, and basic planning are essential, especially in remote sections with few services nearby.
The trail is also called the Sendero Historico because it follows ancient pathways that once connected important medieval centers. Its western endpoint at Finisterre was traditionally believed to mark the end of the known world and remains a popular spot to watch the sunset over the Atlantic.
