Castillo de las Escobetas

Castillo de las Escobetas is a military fortress on the coast of Garrucha with three distinct sections. The structure combines a central rectangular area with rounded corners and a pyramid-shaped right section equipped with loopholes for defensive purposes.

Construction of the fortress began in 1769 under architect Francisco Ruiz Garrido as a defense against pirate raids along the Mediterranean coast. It was part of a broader program of coastal fortifications that Spain built to protect its shoreline during that period.

The fortress served as a landmark for sailors and fishermen along the coast, who used it to signal the arrival of ships and warn of dangers. Its distinctive shape made it a recognizable point of reference for the local community.

The fortress is easily reachable on foot and offers clear views of the sea from multiple vantage points. A small museum inside documents the history and construction details of the fortification.

The structure unusually blends features of a traditional castle with modern bunker elements, making it architecturally distinctive. An external staircase on the left side provides access to upper levels and reveals the practical building approach of its designers.
