Castell de Savassona, Medieval castle in Tavèrnoles, Spain
Castell de Savassona is a medieval castle in Tavèrnoles located at 611 meters (2005 feet) elevation, featuring defensive walls, a triangular tower, and a central residential building with an adjacent chapel. The chapel was originally built in 1060 in Romanesque style and forms a functional unit with the fortress.
The castle was first documented in 890 and fell under the control of the viscounts of Osona. It later passed to the Savassona family of knights, who gave the fortress its name.
The castle shows the typical features of medieval Catalan architecture through its walls and residential building. Visitors can see today how the fortress and the chapel below it reflect the way people lived during that time.
The castle sits on a hilltop and offers views across the surrounding region, though reaching it requires some physical effort. Visitors should expect uneven terrain and narrow passages in places, as this is a historic site with original structures.
The castle once passed through the hands of several noble families, moving from the Vila family to the Llupia family and finally to the Ferrer family. In 1900 it was sold to Vicenç Cuyàs Piera, marking a new chapter for the property.
