Sant Aniol d'Agulla

Sant Aniol d'Agulla is a Romanesque church in Montagut i Oix with a single nave covered by a barrel vault that opens into a semicircular apse. The walls display blind arches in Lombard style that give structure to the building's exterior.

Benedictine monks established this place in 859 after being displaced from their original monastery, which had been attacked. The building then developed over the centuries as an important place of faith in this mountain region.

The place bears the name of an early saint and functions today as a quiet space for prayer, where visitors notice the simple furnishings and the skilled craftsmanship of its Romanesque construction.

Access is via a stone staircase leading to a small courtyard where you can view the building. The surroundings are rural and sometimes windy, so comfortable footwear is recommended.

Beneath the building lies a chapel carved into rock with a natural spring that has been venerated as a holy place for centuries. This underground space shows how early inhabitants integrated the natural landscape into their sacred spaces.
