La Torre Roja

La Torre Roja is a medieval watchtower standing at the edge of two municipalities in Catalonia. The structure consists of two concentric stone rings that form a single fortification with notably thick surrounding walls.

The location was inhabited in ancient times and later served as a Roman fortress called Puig Castellar. In the medieval period this site was reinforced again as a watchtower to watch over the surrounding lands.

The stone building displays Romanesque construction methods visible in how blocks fit together and patterns on the outer walls. You can observe the careful craftsmanship that medieval builders applied to this structure.

The site is reachable via a marked hiking trail from one of the surrounding towns. The walk up takes roughly an hour to ninety minutes depending on your starting point and pace.

The two stone walls differ notably in their thickness revealing different phases of construction and reinforcement. This architectural variation provides insight into how medieval builders adapted and expanded defensive structures over time.
