Ateneo Sueco del Socorro building, Art Deco cultural building in Sueca, Spain
The Ateneo Sueco del Socorro is a two-story building with an irregular polygonal shape located on Sequial Street. Its facade blends Art Deco and Valencian Art Nouveau elements across its roughly 400 square meter footprint.
The building was constructed between 1927 and 1929 after three houses on the site were acquired under president Josep Llerandi Núñez. This renovation reflected the modernization efforts taking place in the region during that period.
Inside, you can see wall murals by Alfredo Claros showing the stages of rice farming throughout the year. A central lamp from the old Serrano Theater in town adds to the interior's character.
The building serves as a cultural center with a cafeteria and lounge areas for activities and gatherings. It is centrally located in Sueca and easily accessible on foot from the town center.
Three giant octopuses crown the curved pediment of the facade, creating an unexpected decorative touch that few visitors notice. Inside, the main stand is supported by Tuscan columns arranged to resemble an Asian pagoda structure.
