Laia l'arquera, Steel sculpture in Porta Laietana, Mataró, Spain
Laia l'arquera is a monumental steel sculpture at the entrance of Porta Laietana depicting an archer figure that rises to approximately 115 feet at its highest point. The work combines geometric forms with figurative elements, creating a landmark visible from many vantage points across the city.
Created in 1998, the sculpture stands on the site of a former harbor district that shaped Mataró's economic past. It is oriented toward Burriac mountain, where the ancient Iberian settlement of Ilturo existed before the Roman period.
The archer embodies the maritime traditions of Mataró and the city's deep connection to the sea. It celebrates female strength and independence rooted in local archery symbolism.
The sculpture is freely visible at any time of day since it stands in a public space accessible year-round. The best views come from different angles around Porta Laietana, particularly in daylight hours.
The figure encodes five cosmic elements within its form: earth, water, fire, wind, and a fifth transcendent aspect. This esoteric layer gives the work a depth that extends beyond its physical presence.
