Sant Martí de Montnegre

Sant Martí de Montnegre is a parish church in Sant Celoni with a straightforward plan featuring one central nave covered by a barrel vault and ending in a semicircular apse. A substantial belfry tower dominates the front facade, crowned with crenellations and a pyramidal roof that gives the building its distinctive silhouette.

The building was first documented in 1022 and served as the administrative center of the Barony of Montnegre for centuries. It underwent substantial rebuilding work between 1700 and 1800 while maintaining its medieval core structure.

The church serves as a gathering place for the village community and continues to host religious services and local celebrations today. It shows how a small settlement built its traditions around this building over the centuries.

The church sits at an elevated position 467 meters above sea level overlooking the village and is accessible on foot. Visitors should note that access depends on terrain conditions and opening hours may be limited to service times.

The belfry tower was not built as a separate element but forms the entire width of the facade, giving the building an unusually compact appearance. This design approach combined defensive needs with space efficiency in a single structural solution.
