Monument a Prim, monument in Reus, Spain
The Monument a Prim is a bronze sculpture on a rectangular marble base located in Plaza de Prim in Reus, created in 1891 by artist Lluís Puiggener Fernández. The pedestal is adorned with carved reliefs depicting scenes from Prim's military career, including his campaigns in Mexico and the Battle of Castillejos.
The monument was planned in 1882 to honor Joan Prim, a local military and political figure who died in 1870 and was instrumental in the Revolution of 1868. Construction was delayed due to political disagreements and debates over the design, with the statue finally unveiled in 1893.
The statue depicts Joan Prim in a commanding pose on horseback, symbolizing his role as a military leader. The iron cannons surrounding the base connect the sculpture to his military campaigns and serve as a visual link to the battles that defined his career.
The monument sits in Plaza de Prim in central Reus and is easily accessible on foot, with sidewalks and nearby streets providing convenient access. The square is clean and well-maintained, with plenty of space to walk around and view the carved reliefs and iron cannon supports.
The original Prim monument in Barcelona's Ciutadella Park was destroyed in 1936, but the Reus version survived even the turmoil of the Civil War. The monument was temporarily removed in 1975 for construction work and returned to its original location in 1977, demonstrating its resilience through decades of change.
