Platja dels Riells, Sand beach in L'Escala, Spain
Platja dels Riells is a broad, golden sand beach that runs for just under 600 meters along the edge of L'Escala. The sand is fine and soft, sloping gently into clear, shallow water that makes the shoreline feel open and safe for wading.
This stretch of coast belonged for a long time to a fishing community whose small boats were pulled up on the sand after each trip. The beach became part of the town's daily life as L'Escala grew, keeping its simple working feel even as summer visitors arrived.
A slow, family-oriented rhythm marks the beach, with children building sandcastles near the water while older visitors swim or read in the sun. Along the edge, small cafés and snack bars face the sand, where people sit outside with cold drinks and watch the light change over the bay.
The beach sits right by the town, so you can reach it on foot or by bike along the seafront promenade. A municipal parking area is close by, but it fills quickly in summer, so arriving early in the day or later in the afternoon is usually more comfortable.
Near the southern end of the sand, a few rocky patches and small coves break the straight line of the shore, offering quieter corners away from the main stretch. The close visibility in the water often lets you spot small fish moving through the shallows right beside swimmers.
