Es Codolar, beach in Tossa de Mar
Es Codolar is a small urban beach of coarse sand and gravel in Tossa de Mar, 45 m long and 18 m wide on average, set between the hill crowned by the castle and a stretch of rocks and cliffs. It lies south-facing below the Codolar or Homenatge tower of the Vila Vella wall, and fishing boats are still pulled up on the sand. The entry into the water is fairly steep, with a sandy seabed in the centre and rocky ground at both sides.
The beach has long been a gathering place for fishermen and sailors from Tossa de Mar's harbor. It developed into a bathing beach during the 20th century as tourism grew along the Costa Brava.
The cove measures 45 m long by an average of 18 m wide, with coarse sand and gravel and a steep entry into the water; the seabed is sandy in the centre and rocky at both sides. Reach it on foot by stairs from the Vila Vella wall or along the camí de ronda from the cliff, or through the much-photographed small hole in the wall by Plaça Pintor Roig Soler. Showers and sunbed rental are available, and bars and restaurants stand close by.
