Menhirs for Peace, Outdoor sculpture installation in A Coruña, Spain
Menhirs for Peace is an outdoor sculpture installation consisting of ten tall granite monoliths arranged along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline on Paseo dos Menhires. Each stone features square openings carved into it, allowing visitors to frame and view the surrounding landscape from different perspectives.
Galician sculptor Manolo Paz created this stone installation in 1994, drawing inspiration from the ancient standing stones scattered throughout the Iberian Peninsula. The work emerged during a period when the region was reconnecting with its prehistoric heritage.
The stone arrangement speaks to connections between generations, with each monolith representing the relationship between parents and children. As you look through the openings, you can physically experience how these bonds are expressed in the work.
The installation sits directly on Paseo dos Menhires with unobstructed access to the waterfront and clear views of the Tower of Hercules lighthouse. The location is easy to reach on foot and works well as part of a leisurely coastal walk.
The ten granite blocks were deliberately designed with varying heights and opening sizes to create subtle differences in how the landscape is perceived. This approach subtly underscores the different ways relationships between generations take form.
