Castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra

The Castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra is a medieval fortress atop a hill with defensive towers, a clock tower, and a major tower that overlooks the Ebro Valley. The structure preserves different architectural periods from alterations and reinforcements made throughout the centuries.

The fortress was built in the 10th century as a Navarrese stronghold and formed a defensive line with Davalillo castle to protect the territory. This strategic arrangement shaped the security of the region for several centuries.

The castle grounds sit adjacent to the parish church of Santa María la Mayor, whose Gothic style shapes the character of this place. Together, the two structures show how religious and military life were closely interwoven in this hilltop settlement.

Visitors can follow a one-kilometer route through medieval streets to reach the castle, passing emblazoned houses and 18th-century palaces along the way. The climb is manageable on foot, though the hillside terrain requires some effort.

Archaeological excavations beneath the castle walls revealed a stone winepress and cellar, indicating medieval wine production took place within this fortified structure. This discovery shows the fortress served economic purposes alongside military ones.
