Castle of Santa Cruz of A Guarda, Military fortress in A Guarda, Spain.
The Castle of Santa Cruz is a military fortress above A Guarda with four bastions extending from its main defensive wall. Stone watchtowers reinforce each corner, and the structure commands views of the surrounding landscape.
The fortress was built around 1664 during the war between Spain and Portugal, using stone from the medieval town wall for rapid construction. This allowed for quick reinforcement of the border defense in this strategic area.
The Interpretation Center inside the fortress displays the history of border defenses along the Miño River through interactive exhibits. Visitors can learn how this fortification was part of a larger defensive network.
The site can be accessed through two entrances: the Town Gate on Puerto Rico Street or the Socorro Gate on Santo Domingo Street. Wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is uneven and there are multiple paths to explore throughout the complex.
The modern renovation added stainless steel pavilions and zinc roofs while keeping the original quarry granite walls intact. This blend of old stone and contemporary structures creates an interesting contrast throughout the fortress.
