Columnes de Bellaterra, Granite monument at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain
Four reddish granite columns rise between 25 and 40 meters high, twisting upward in a spiral formation at the southern entrance of the university campus.
Valencian sculptor Andreu Alfaro created these monumental columns in 1999 as a symbol for the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona entrance.
Each column represents fundamental principles: knowledge acquisition, freedom of expression, cultural identity, and solidarity within the university community.
Stone plaques surrounding the monument display names of universities belonging to the Xarxa Vives network, creating an educational connection point.
The internal structure contains cylindrical metal cores extending 12 meters underground, with the tallest column weighing 560 tons.
