Cárcel La Galera, Former women's prison in Alcalá de Henares, Spain.
Cárcel La Galera is a massive stone building with cell galleries and two dormitory pavilions that retain elements from its past as a convent. The structure shows how different layers of use have left their mark on the architecture.
The building was constructed in 1883 on the site of a Carmelite monastery dating to 1571. The prison operated under the management of the Daughters of Charity until it closed in 1978.
The original church of the complex now functions as the University Theater La Galera, serving the academic community. This transformation shows how the site's spiritual roots remain visible while serving contemporary cultural needs.
The building is located on Santo Tomás de Aquino Street and belongs to the University of Alcalá. Access may be limited as it is part of the university campus, so visiting hours may vary.
Architect Tomás Aranguren designed the building with an innovative radial system similar to Madrid's Model Prison. This design approach was pioneering in European prison architecture of that era.
