Casa Joaquim Espalter i Rosàs

Casa Joaquim Espalter i Rosàs, Residential building in Sant Pere Santa Caterina i la Ribera, Spain.

Casa Joaquim Espalter i Rosàs is a multi-story residential building with seven ground-floor openings, a mezzanine, three main floors, and an attic space. The facade features enclosed balconies with wrought iron railings and stone slabs, while the corner detail includes a rounded continuous balcony with decorative molded eaves.

The building was constructed in 1783 when merchant Joaquim Espalter i Rosas demolished two previously owned houses to build this new residence at the intersection of Esparteria Street. It stands at a location where Barcelona's urban growth was concentrated during that period.

The building shows how successful merchants lived in Barcelona at the time: with direct street access, generous rooms, and large windows designed to let in plenty of light. It reflects the prosperity of those who could afford such a home.

The building is located in the old town and can be easily reached from the nearby waterfront promenade, making it convenient for a walk through medieval streets. The neighborhood is densely built with many similar buildings from the same period, allowing you to see the architecture in its larger context.

The corner balcony arrangement is special: instead of following the usual right-angled design, it curves smoothly around the corner with a rounded form. This detail shows how craftsmen of the time created elegant solutions to make the architecture feel more natural.
