Ehrensvärd's grave

Ehrensvärd's grave is a granite memorial with bronze ornaments shaped like ship bows at both ends, decorated with military symbols including a shield, sword, and helmet. The structure stands in the Great Courtyard of the fortress with carefully crafted details across its surface.

Ehrensvärd died in 1772 and King Gustaf III ordered him buried in the fortress as a mark of honor for his military service. The memorial was later completed using bronze salvaged from captured weapons.

The memorial displays inscriptions from the 18th century honoring Ehrensvärd as field marshal and fortress commander. These carvings reflect how deeply people valued his leadership and his influence on the fortress's development.

The memorial site stands in the Great Courtyard about one kilometer from the main quay and is easy to reach on foot. The area is open to visitors, and the location is straightforward to find during daylight hours.

The memorial was crafted from bronze sourced from enemy cannons captured during a major conflict. This uncommon choice shows how the victors transformed their enemy's defeat into an honoring monument.
