Pauanne, Folk music band in Kaustinen, Finland.
Pauanne is a Finnish trio from Kaustinen that combines violin, Hammond B3 organ, and percussion with archive recordings from the early 20th century. The group performs at music festivals and special events, both in Finland and abroad.
The trio was formed in 2017 and took its name from an ancient Finnish thunder god. Two years later, in 2019, the group received the Newcomer Award at the Ethnogala.
Pauanne draws on archive recordings that captured healing spells from Lappish traditions, prison sermons, and cattle calls from Karelia. These recordings date from a time when such practices were still part of everyday life in rural Finland.
The ensemble mainly performs at international music festivals, with bookings handled through the Saura Booking Agency in Finland. Checking festival calendars in advance is the best way to find out where and when the group will appear next.
During live shows, up to 20 musicians who died decades ago perform alongside the trio through archive recordings played on stage. This means that living players and voices from the past share the same performance at the same time.
