Pieksämäki Old Church, Church building in Pieksämäki, Finland
Pieksämäki Old Church is a wooden church building that dates to the 1750s and features a separate bell tower structure. The building can accommodate between 600 and 800 people in its main sanctuary space.
The bell tower was built in 1746 by architect August Sorsa, seven years before the church itself was completed in 1753. The building became part of the Diocese of Kuopio and underwent interior restoration work in the early 2000s.
The pulpit and gallery railings display paintings by Mikael Toppelius that add artistic depth to the interior. These artworks shape how the space feels when you step inside.
The church is located at Kirkkotie 31 in the town of Pieksämäki and is easy to reach. It remains in active use and welcomes visitors during regular opening times.
The bell tower is the oldest standing building in the entire region, having been completed seven years before the church itself. This unusual building sequence makes the site particularly noteworthy for those interested in regional history.
