Willgottheim, Commune in the arrondissement of Saverne, Bas-Rhin, France
Willgottheim is a commune in the Bas-Rhin department of northeastern France, located in the arrondissement of Saverne, roughly 20 miles (30 km) northwest of Strasbourg. The village is built around a central core of stone houses, narrow streets, and a church, with agricultural fields and small forests on its outskirts.
Willgottheim has been inhabited since the medieval period, as shown by the Romanesque church of Saint-Maurice, which dates to the 12th century. In the 1970s, the village merged with the neighboring commune of Wœllenheim, giving it its current boundaries.
The residents of Willgottheim are called Willgottheimois and Willgottheimoises, a name that reflects the village's deep local identity. Life here turns around the weekly market, seasonal festivals, and the church at the center of the village, which still draws people together for gatherings and celebrations.
Willgottheim is easy to reach from Strasbourg by road and sits near a main highway, making it a convenient base for exploring the surrounding area. Once there, the village and its countryside are best discovered on foot or by bike along quiet country paths.
Two small streams, the Hohnengraben and the Leisbach, flow through the village and have shaped its landscape for centuries. They are easy to miss on a map, but anyone walking through the streets will hear them before seeing them.
