Fresque des Lyonnais, Wall mural in 1st arrondissement of Lyon, France
The Fresque des Lyonnais is a large-scale wall painting on rue de la Martinière that depicts people from different eras positioned within windows and on balconies. The work uses the building's actual architecture as part of the design, creating a special three-dimensional effect.
The mural was created in 1994 by the artist group CitéCréation and has shaped the streetscape of rue de la Martinière ever since. This project was part of a movement to fill urban walls with decorative art and bring forgotten facades back to life.
The figures painted here represent artists, thinkers, and cooks who shaped Lyon and made it proud. Visitors can spot people from different backgrounds who played important roles in the city's identity and continue to inspire those who pass by.
The mural is freely visible from the street during daytime and can be viewed from multiple angles. It looks best in early morning or late afternoon when the light brings out the details and shadows in the composition.
The figures seem to interact with the building's actual windows and balconies, leaving viewers unsure of what is real and what is painted. This optical trick makes each look at the work a new discovery.
