Évry serves as the administrative center of the Essonne department and sits southeast of the capital in a zone planned as a new town during the 1960s. The streets are laid out in wide patterns, buildings follow a modern grid, and public squares connect residential areas with commercial and service districts.
The original village of Évry-Petit-Bourg grew slowly until the mid-20th century and transformed from 1965 onward into a planned new town to absorb the growing population around Paris. Today the commune forms part of the larger municipality of Évry-Courcouronnes, which emerged in 2019 from the merger of two neighboring towns.
