MC93, Theatre in Bobigny, France
MC93 is a theatre in Bobigny, just northeast of Paris, with three performance spaces of different sizes for stage productions of all kinds. The main hall seats several hundred people, while the two smaller rooms are used for more contained formats.
The theatre opened in 1980 as part of a French cultural policy that aimed to move arts life out of Paris and into the suburbs. This movement traces back to the 1960s, when culture minister André Malraux began setting up similar institutions across the country.
MC93 draws audiences from across the Île-de-France region, bringing contemporary theatre, dance, and world music to a suburb that rarely sits at the center of Parisian cultural life. Visitors to a performance will find a mixed crowd from the local neighborhood and from much farther away.
The theatre is in Bobigny, which is easy to reach from Paris by metro line 5. For evening shows, arriving a little early gives time to get a feel for the area around the venue.
Since 2023, MC93 has run a program called Prépa' Théâtre 93 that helps young people from Seine-Saint-Denis prepare for entry into theatre and performing arts schools. The training takes place directly on the stages and in the rehearsal rooms of the venue, so participants work in a professional setting from the start.
