Remiremont Abbey, Former monastery and abbey in Remiremont, France.
The abbey church features an eleventh-century crypt containing the tombs of former abbesses, with architectural elements from the thirteenth century.
Founded around 620 by Saint Romaric, the monastery moved from Mount Haberd to the Moselle valley in 818, adopting the Rule of Saint Benedict.
The abbey transformed into a chapter of canonesses who needed to prove 200 years of noble descent to join the religious community.
The abbatial residence now serves as the town hall and courthouse of Remiremont, following reconstruction after fires in 1750 and 1871.
The abbess gained the title of Imperial Princess in 1290, requiring the presentation of a white horse with purple cloth to Rome every three years.
