Abbatiale Saint-Pierre, Medieval abbey church in Remiremont, France

Abbatiale Saint-Pierre is a basilica-plan church in local sandstone: a central vessel of four Gothic rib-vaulted bays, with engaged columns carrying the pointed vaults, flanked by simple side aisles. The nave is sober; the choir is raised, ends in a pentagonal apse and is decorated in marble and gypsum. The west tower-porch is topped by a bulbous spire, and the south wall is blind since the abbey palace was built against it.

Three churches have stood on this site: a Carolingian building (7th–9th century), a Romanesque abbey church consecrated by Pope Leo IX on 15 October 1050, and the Gothic church begun after a fire at the end of the 13th century. The nave was largely finished by the late 14th century, vaults were decorated in the 15th, and the noble chapter that ran the abbey was dissolved in 1790.

The abbey church keeps the name Saint-Pierre from the noble chapter of canonesses that ran it until 1790; the abbess, a princess of the Empire, sat under a canopy in the choir, reached directly from the abbey palace. The ambulatory windows show the Passion and Resurrection, while the apse glass tells the life of Saint Romaric in nine scenes.

The church stands in the canonical quarter, with the former abbey palace housing the town hall nearby. The south wall is blind since the palace was built against it, so the main light enters from the east end and the west porch tower. The crypt lies under the raised choir, visible outside only through small openings at ground level.

The crypt, listed as a monument historique in 1926, is the only surviving part of the 12th-century Romanesque church. It covers almost the whole surface of the upper choir, with a central chapel on eight columns, three five-bay vessels, two side chapels and three semicircular apses. The Saint-Antoine chapel keeps wall paintings of Saint Anthony, the Crucifixion, Saint Lawrence, Saint Brice and Saint Martin.
