Abbaye Sainte-Colombe de Saint-Denis-lès-Sens, Merovingian monastery in Saint-Denis-lès-Sens, France
The monastery complex includes the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, built in the 19th century on the site of the former abbey church.
Founded in 620 by King Clotaire II on Saint Columba's tomb, the abbey endured attacks from Muslims in 732 and suffered a fire by Hungarian raiders in 937.
The abbey served as a refuge for Pope Alexander III and Thomas Becket between 1166 and 1170 during their exile from Rome.
Located at 10 Rue de l'Abbaye in Saint-Denis-lès-Sens, the monastery now functions as a convalescence center for patients requiring medical care.
The original abbey housed the relics of Saint Thibaut, brought from Italy in 1075, until their disappearance during the French Revolution in 1792.
