Château de la Roche Courbon, Renaissance castle in Saint-Porchaire, France.

Château de la Roche Courbon is a 15th-century fortress that was later expanded into a residential home and sits elevated above the surrounding landscape. Below it spread French-style gardens featuring geometric flower beds, clipped shrubs, and a central pool that mirrors the castle.

The fortress was founded in 1475 by Jehan de Latour as a military structure in the region. In the 17th century, the Courbon family transformed it into a comfortable residence and shaped much of its current appearance.

The castle reflects aristocratic taste through its interiors, which feature 17th-century decorative woodwork and sculptures that reveal how wealthy families lived here. These details show the values and style of the people who occupied the residence.

The castle welcomes visitors from February through December and offers guided tours of the interiors and grounds. It is best to allow several hours to fully explore both areas.

The gardens were created using a sophisticated technique where deep piles were driven through marshy ground to reach the stable sandstone bedrock underneath. This hidden foundation allows the gardens to remain perfectly level despite the challenging soil conditions.
