Decazeville, Industrial commune in Aveyron, France
Decazeville is an industrial town in the Aveyron region of southern France. It spreads across valleys with former coal mining sites mixed with modern administrative buildings throughout the landscape.
The Duke of Decazes founded this industrial center in 1826 as a hub for coal mining and steel production. The facility, called Houillères et Fonderies de l'Aveyron, quickly became an economic powerhouse for the region.
The town's name honors the Duke who shaped its industrial growth. Walking through the streets today, you can see how the mining era left its mark on the buildings and layout where workers and their families once lived.
Markets happen on Tuesdays and Fridays in the town center with local goods for sale. Nearby towns Aubin and Cransac hold their market days on different dates if you want to explore the area.
The Notre-Dame church holds an exceptional set of paintings showing the Way of the Cross created by French artist Gustave Moreau. These artworks often catch visitors by surprise in what was once a mining town.
