Tarare originated as a priory established by Savigny Abbey in the 12th century, developing into a settlement of weavers, shoemakers, and tanners.
Every five years, Tarare organizes the Festival of Mousselines, celebrating the textile heritage with fabric decorations and colored floats throughout the streets.
The town contains multiple educational institutions, including two high schools, and maintains strong transportation connections via the SNCF station and A89 motorway.
Tarare became the French capital of curtain manufacturing in the 1950s, producing 80 percent of the national Tergal veil output.
